Medal Winners!

Congrats to Graham Courtney, Mike Patton, John Plant and the Kisell family on their medals at the Alberta Track Championships, August 8-9.

Biting into the Graham cracker!

Mike - out of focus and loving it.

John served as both official timer and racer.

The gold medal Kisell family went beyond the call of duty by preparing all the excellent food! I didn't get a picture of the food but they brought out the whole rig to prepare the food for the end of the day! YAY KISELLS!
Thanks to all the additional Synergy volunteers who helped out over the course of the event.

Update - July 12

Hello Synergists!

Here's a mid-summer update with a few details you may be interested in. It's been good to see people staying active racing, including Gina, Caeli, and Bailey, all of whom recently competed at National Championships. It's also great to see former Synergists and one of my proteges, Steph Roorda, doing so well at BC Superweek. Nowadays, Steph races for the Jazz Apple Team out of New Zealand but not too long ago she was a Synergist!

Other than regular CBTL racing, I haven't done a single weekend ABA race yet so I'm sorry if I've missed you at the races. I'm just ramping things up now as I usually do, preferring to peak for the late season provincial championship races when others are fading away and burning out!

Here's what's happening this month:

Volunteer Obligation

As many of you know, we usually host a race as part of our committment to Alberta cycling. This year our date for a track race was taken by one of the Edmonton clubs so as I mentioned in a previous update, we're going to provide volunteer services at other races. Here's the first of the races where volunteers are needed:

Alberta Track Championships
August 8-9
Glenmore Velodrome
Host: Calgary Bicycle Track League

Volunteers Needed:
Saturday - 7
Sunday - 6

We have roughly 30 people in the club so this will cover just under half with a few others already volunteering at the race.

Our second volunteer date will take place at one of the cyclocross race events so if you race track, skip this one and volunteer at the next.

Please let me know when you'd like to volunteer!

Race Reimbursements

July is your first opportunity to be reimbursed for your race entries this year. Having just gone through hours of preparing our books for our AGLC audit, I'm going to insist that you follow the steps below.

Steps to submit your receipts:

1. Have your receipts glued or taped (only around the edges as some paper will make the printing disappear!) to an 8.5 x 11" sheet of paper (on the back of reused paper is good)! DO NOT STAPLE.

2. If you're printing out Karelo receipts (which most of you are), only give me the part that says your name, the name of the race, and how much you paid. I don't need all 3 sheets for one race.

3. Visa/Mastercard receipts are not valid as Karelo receipts. (That's straight form the AGLC.) We need originals for fuel/hotel as well if you're eligible to submit for that.

4. Put your receipts in calendar order (May races first, July last).

5. Come on down to CP's house this Wednesday:

Date: Wednesday, 15 July
Time: 6 - 8 PM (No early/late birds, please.)
Place: CP's house, 413 - 3500 Varsity Drive NW
Note: Be patient.

6. If you're not able to make it, mail your receipts to me at:
413-3500 Varsity Drive NW
Calgary T2L 1Y3

I'll complete your reimbursement by August 5th.

Out-of-Province Racing

A reminder that you must complete the forms in their entirety they may be rejected by the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission, which may mean you'll be on your own to pay.

Most of what people are missing is the INVITATION to compete as well as a DAILY INTINERARY. Again, these are AGLC rules, not ours.

I may be handing your forms back to you if you haven't completed this. If you need an example, perhaps I can find a properly completed form and show you.

Team Photo

Our team photo and summer get-together will return to the Glenmore Velodrome sometime in early August. Stay tuned!

Clothing

I have placed a new clothing order with Louis Garneau but as you might expect, they close operations for 2 weeks during the summer. This means that additional clothing may not be available until mid-September.

In the interim, the following clothing is available at a cost of $25/item, cheque payable to Synergy Racing.

2008 Clothing
Jerseys
Small (1)
Large (8)
x-large (1)

Bib shorts - small (4)
Women's shorts (non bibs) - small (1)

2007 Clothing

Track / Velodrome Training Racing (Calgary Bicycle Track League)We have a number of track racers in our club and we've won the CBTL team trophy for a number of seasons now. Regarding CBTL FEES: If you raced at least 51% of the time last year, we will pay your fee. If not, pay your CBTL fee to start and we'll reimburse you when when you've raced 51% of the time this season.

2009 Synergy Team Meeting

7 pm, Monday, March 2, 2009

IBM Canada Building, 227-11th Ave. SW - Rocky Mountain 'A' Room. Doors are on the northeast corner of the building. Since the meeting is afterhours, someone (most likely Reid) will be at the front door to let you in because doors are locked after 6pm.

This will be an organizational meeting for all returning, new and potential members of the team for the 2009 race season. It will be an opportunity to review membership obligations and pay membership fees for the 2009 season. We will also review individual and category goal-setting, meet the members in the same categories, and go over some of the fun initiatives we are planning for the season.

PLEASE NOTE: Membership forms and ABA license forms are available on-line here. It is suggested you complete them and bring them to the meeting. Please note: your 2009 performance bond of $100 is required by the end of this meeting on March 2nd in order to confirm your spot on the team for 2009. Immediately after March 2nd, all positions not filled to our pre-determined quota will be released for other racers in the Alberta cycling community that are interested in joining the team. If you have already paid your performance bond or your membership in full, ignore this note and thank you for your prompt registration and payment!

Full season fees are:
$50 club member (payable by all members)
$350 race member (payable by members intending to race ABA-sanctioned races fulfilling Synergy racing member obligations per membership requirements)
$100 performance bond (returned to member post-season upon successful completion of requirements)

Total payment $500 for season, of which $100 will be returned to you at end of season if you fulfill your obligations (Synergy sponsored race volunteerism, 8 races completed (O21), 4 races completed (U22), casino volunteerism)

Mark your calendars! See you all there!
