BK Memorial Cyclocross Race

Give yourself a Brian Kullman-style hug if you helped out at our race last Sunday.

Big-up to Keith Bayly for laying tread on this one. A lesser man wouldn't have lasted the rejection from the various bureaucracies involved in organizing the race.

We had perfect weather and a delightfully patient crew of volunteers. Thanks to those of you who arrived early and pitched in throughout the day.

We also had over 90 racers in attendance at the site for the four categories that raced throughout the day. Fantastic!

I know a few of you sat around during the race wondering what you could do... until the races were over! The clean-up and course tear-down is always the most crucial part of this event. We wanted to make a good impression by collecting garbage afterward so we can use the venue in the future. Special thanks go to Keith's wife for going that extra kilometre (literally) in cleaning up the school yard.

We'll aim to do this race next year.

Thanks all!

cp

PS: Stay tuned for an AGM notice to be released next
week. We're lookin' at late October/early November.

Synergy Training Program at Peak Power

I'd like to continue the relationship between Synergy and Peak Power by offering testing and training at a reduced price for all Synergy members.

Testing package: includes anthropometry, body composition, VO2max (and development of training zones), and the development of a Critical Power curve (over : $275 (retest available for $225).

Training package: includes resistance training program specializing in strength
and power development and an 8 month membership at Peak Power. I have also set
aside three sessions a week (Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7:00pm, and Saturdays at 11:00am for a small group training session). The regular price for an 8 month membership with coaching and program design is $1000, but since I am doing the program design on my own time and most of the instruction myself, (world renowned Olympic lifting coach Henrik Grigorian will also be available on Tuesday and Thursday evenings) I can offer Synergists a cost of $500. This is a fantastic training opportunity especially aimed at Track and Crit specific athletes at a very low cost.

Testing and Training Package would be $500 + $275 = $775 for all 8 months.

I am hoping to start the resistance training on first or second week of October,
but will wait to see how many people I have interested. The testing can be done
anytime. Please contact me via phone 210-4098 or by e-mail: ryan@sportdevelopment.com if you are interested in joining me.

Thanks,
Ryan

BK Memorial Ride

On July 22nd, approximately 100 riders and supporters met at the Station Flats parking lot to register and ride to the BK Memorial near Elbow Falls as a fundraiser for the Foothills Diabetes Association but also to reflect on the memory of our former teammate, Brian Kullman.
cp was available to make a short presentation while Felix, Reid, Frank, John, and Chris signed in for the ride. It was a beautiful day, and Brian's brother Kevin and parents should be commended for the excellent work they did to put this event together for the Foothills Diabetes Association.

Consequently, there are "Ride for BK" wristbands that were purchased for distribution to the Synergy club. Get yours from cp. It is a really cool black band, but not your standard band. This one has a tread, resembling a knobby tire! Very cool.

Hot in the Synergy

Happy 31-degrees C, everyone!

Is anyone interested in doing the Team Time Trial in Canmore this upcoming Saturday? If so, please respond to synergyracingcc@yahoo.ca and we may be able to get a team together. Otherwise, good luck to those of you doing the Individual Time Trial this Sunday!

Congratulations to Reid Dalgleish and Frank Kovacs who took home National Champion jerseys on the track just over a week ago. John Plant was also in the thick of
things at the Championships.

Speaking of Plants, Sherwood Plant has been representing Alberta for the past number of weeks at both the National Track Championships, the Road Championships and at the premier junior race in North America, Le Tour de l'Abitibi. One has to wonder if
Sherwood will have anything left in those legs for August!

Big up to Craig Debellefeuille for being the most consistent racing-Synergist of the year and for recently flying the Synergy colours at BC Superweek.

Bon voyage to Felix Haspel and Colin Walsh, who are on their way to Redmond, Washington for the FSA Grand Prix Track Race and Whale of a Crit! criterium this
weekend.

This is long overdue news: We're all smiles at knowing that Craig Good has now had a girlfriend for over 6 months. And she rides! It didn't Dr. Good long to put that PHD to use.

Speaking of riding, Chris Hooper was back on his bike and racing hard this past Thursday at the track. Chris and his wife Maura had their second child (a boy
named Jack) back in May and their offspring have kept them busy--and deservedly so!

I hope everyone is looking forward to the Bowness Hill Climb and Provincial Criterium in less than two weeks. We've always done well there and having recently
checked out the pot-holed course, I can assure you that it'll be an interesting race.

While some of you are looking forward to cooler weather, some of our juniors riders are looking forward to the Alberta Youth Championships at the end of August. We've a great crew of younger riders this year and we're delighted to have them (especially the Walsh clan)!

Finally, best of luck to Bailey McKnight, our one dedicated mountain biker, as he and his father tackle TransRockies from Panorama to Fernie from August 12-18!

Look forward to more Synergy heat later in the summer. We'll have a get-together at the velodrome sometime when racing cools off.

BK Memorial Charity Ride

Shish-ke-babs

This weekend 12 members of the Synergy Racing club attended the Velocity Shish-ke-bab Track Meet at the Argyll Velodrome in Edmonton. It was a great weekend of fast-paced action, great results, variable weather and team bonding. Although not as well-attended this year by participants or spectators, the racing was better specifically because there seems to be a lot more parity in the racers and the teams this year than previous years. No one individual or team this weekend was able to cycle away with a decisive win in any of the events. I'm impressed by the quality of the competition this year -- no one is having an easy time maintaining their standings or position.

Felix ended up winning the Men's 1/2 Omnium, with good showings by Mike, Frank and myself. Brad ended up second in the Men's Cat 4 Omnium, and Natasha and Steph were 1/2 in the Women's A. Our new juniors also represented well -- Patrick, Derek, Elise and Gina. cp provided much-appreciated tactics and support.

Here are some pics and videos from the weekend:

Considerations on Entry Fee payments

I just want to clarify a few things since it appears that there is some confusion on how to pay entry fees for races.

1. For races that have in-person race-day registration, you are required to email synergyracingcc@yahoo.ca before race day to confirm your attendance and arrange to pick up a club cheque to take with you to the race to cover the entry fees. If there is more than one racer attending, we can arrange this between the group of you that are going. If you didn't communicate your intent to race a particular event ahead of time, didn't arrange for a club cheque and you end up paying your own fees, don't expect a reimbursement. Of course, unique situations will be reviewed.

2. For races with pre-registration (either through the ABA or the organizing club), you are required to email synergyracingcc@yahoo.ca before pre-registration starts or when you pre-register so we know ahead of time that you are planning to attend the race. Payment for entry fees is typically done on race day by cheque which will need to be arranged with the Exec members. Typically the races requiring pre-registration are larger and the chances that an Exec member will be attending are quite high. In this case you will not need to be concerned about payment since the Exec member will take care of it. If an Exec member isn't attending, we will need to make arrangements to get a club cheque to you in order to pay the entry fees.

3. For races requiring online registration and e-payment, please contact synergyracingcc@yahoo.ca to see what payment form will be applied. We are encouraging people to register and pay themselves and then submit a receipt to Reid (no receipt, no reimbursement!), however in certain cases e-payments will be done with the club credit card (e.g., Nationals).

Clear as mud? Here are some other considerations:

4. For club trips to races in Alberta where either or both travel and accommodation are being prepared by the Execs, you need to email synergyracingcc@yahoo.ca clearly stating whether you need to travel in the team transportation, whether you need hotel accommodations, or both. We can only plan vehicle rentals and room reservations accurately when we know how many Synergists are going (and not the day before the race either, please!). Use common sense and courtesy when planning your provincial races.

5. For races outside of Alberta, U22 riders will need to fill out the 'Out of Province' travel forms to be submitted for approval, preferably as soon as you know what your expenses will be. This is the only way you can get your expenses reimbursed, no exceptions. O22 riders cannot get their expenses reimbursed by AGLC rules other than race entry fees (with a submitted receipt).

Velocity Stage Race/Bikes On Broadway

Yes, it's hard to believe, but we're only weeks away from the start of the 2007 season.

For those that would like to stay with the team and take club transportation up to Edmonton on Friday night, May 4th for the Velocity Stage Race on May 5 & 6 to return late on Sunday, we will be reserving vans and booking rooms at the University of Alberta Residences very soon. I urge you to consider whether you are going soon and send a response to here as soon as possible. Deadline to hop on the Synergy Love Train will be April 27th.

As well, for those planning on going to Saskatoon we will need to know soon in order to do our ol' AGLC funding requests. The Bikes On Broadway Stage Race takes place on Victoria Day long weekend, May 19-21. If you are interested in going with the team to this event, please send an email here.

Thanks!
Reid
